What is the Difference Between the Gentle Leader Head Collar and the Easy Walk Harness?
The Gentle Leader® Head Collar and Easy Walk™ Harness by Premier Pet Products are dog training tools that encourage obedient behavior using positive techniques. Both tools are recommended by trainers and veterinarians. So, how do you decide which tool is right for your pet? To make the correct choice, you need to understand how each device works. Brief Description The Gentle Leader Head Collar is a combination collar and nose loop that fits on the dog’s head, similar to a horse’s halter. You use the head collar to restrain and direct your dog by controlling the animal’s head. The Easy Walk Harness is designed to promote polite walking behavior by gently discouraging the dog from pulling on the leash. Unlike traditional harnesses, the leash attaches to a unique martingale loop located in the chest portion of the harness. How the Gentle Leader Head Collar Works The Gentle Leader Head Collar consists of two loops, coupled together to form a figure eight over the dog’s head. One loop creates a collar that encircles the dog’s neck immediately behind the ears. The second loop encircles the dog’s muzzle, and the leash attaches to a ring positioned below the dog’s jaw. When you gently pull the leash, the loops tighten, applying pressure to the back and sides of the neck and the top and bottom of the jaws simultaneously, without constricting the throat. How the Easy Walk Harness Works Similar to horses, dogs have an opposition reflex that causes them to instinctively move toward the point of the body where pressure is applied. When you pull a leash attached to the back of a traditional harness, pressure is applied to the front of the dog’s chest, encouraging him to pull forward—usually the opposite reaction you want, unless you’re a dog sledder! The Easy Walk Harness uses a front-chest leash attachment that tightens slightly across the dog’s chest and shoulders when you pull the leash, steering the dog to the side and redirecting his attention to you. Because the Easy Walk Harness does not constrict the throat, it controls the dog without choking. Considerations You use the Easy Walk Harness primarily to direct and control the dog while walking, but it is also helpful for basic obedience training. The harness is easy-to-use and most dogs accept it with little or no problems. In addition, short-nosed breeds such as bulldogs can comfortably wear the Easy Walk Harness. The Gentle Leader Head Collar really shines when it comes to handling dogs that are strong pullers or have difficult behavior problems. The Gentle Leader helps prevent lunging, jumping and aggressive behavior and can be used to control excessive barking. However, the head collar must be fitted and used correctly; therefore, you must master the proper technique in order to achieve results. While some dogs accept the Gentle Leader immediately, others need time to adjust. Summary If your dog has mild to moderate behavior problems when walking on the leash, the Easy Walk Harness can help make daily walks a more pleasurable experience. The Gentle Leader Head Collar is a good choice for large or strong dogs that are hard to control or have difficult behavior issues.
